Dear Dr. John M. Templeton, Jr.

On behalf of a large group representing the Czech independent press, we would like to express how flattered and proud we are about the fact that the formidable Templeton prize has been awarded to one of our compatriot.
Nevertheless, we would like to ask you an important question in this regard. Is there a hidden agenda in the fact that you awarded the prize to Mr. Halík for the reasons stated in the memorandum?

We, the Czech independent press would like to know the real reasons for Tomáš Halík to be awarded such a prestigious prize.
There are three points to question.

1. How do you know that "Prof. Halík epitomized spiritual progress in his pursuit of greater truths. “Whether risking prison to liberate the minds of his nation or daring to engage views that many keepers of the faith would shun as heretical, Tomáš Halík has continually opened vistas that advance humankind”
“Condemned by his nation’s communist government as an “enemy of the regime” in 1972, Halík, 65, spent nearly two decades organizing and building an extensive secret network of academics, theologians, philosophers and students dedicated to cultivating the intellectual and spiritual underpinnings for the democratic state he and others envisioned.“

In our humble opinion, you may have as well been cunningly misled to believe all this, which is very far from the real truth. Perhaps, next time, more attention should be paid to researching your candidates to avoid such a terrible mistake. In fact, Mr. Halík was during the communism everything else but what is said about him in the laudation. He has worked for the Czech communist ministry of industry until 1984. Before that (from 1972 when he was surpassingly the Enemy of the regime) he worked for a huge national foreign-trade company Chemoprojekt. Both times as instructor in sociology of the top managers of the Czech national enterprises. Foreign trade was a very privileged domain back then. It has never been seen that an individual would at the same time have access to personal data of communist top managers and at the same time, be a part of illegal and secret religious network, except in this concrete case of Tomáš Halík. That is truly remarkable achievement indeed. But the network was not so secret after all.

According to the genuine file by the communist Czech secret police, called “The Preacher” which is openly available at the Czech archive of security services in Prague, Halík has been evaluated (by the secret agents) as suitable for covert work with the communist secret police and qualified as very reliable and trustworthy. He was far from fighting against communist regime. Today, he may claim he was, but his file speaks differently. It would also be very interesting, although a bit harder to get his East German secret police files from the Berlin archive which is, however, slightly more restrictive.

You can download a copy of his Czech secret police file at this link (in Czech):http://uloz.to/quickDownload/JKShS4M

2. "Monsignor Professor Tomáš Halík has been Professor of the Sociology of Religion in the Faculty of Art at the Department of Religious Studies at Charles University in Prague since 1997."

Yes a professor he is, and a strange one, too. He has not produced one single peer reviewed study and appears in 0 (read zero) scientific citations during all these years he claims to be an academic authority. A book co-authored by him is in the library of the police academy, inherited from the communist police school. It is a second edition from the year 1986. Strange to imagine that an “enemy of the regime” would get his books published still in 1986 and displayed in the police school, though.

The Czech government scientific committee has deemed his works filed to the national publication register as not conform to the standards of scientific literature and has decided to remove them from the register. This has been acknowledged by the acting head of the national register, the prime minister of the Czech government, Mr. Rusnok in November 2013.

3. "Halík resolved to enter the priesthood. He was clandestinely ordained in 1978 in East Germany, an event kept secret even from his mother."

So secret that he has not presented one single document which would certify his ordination until today,

4. Please Sir, tell us who told you that the "Czech Christian Academy is one of the nation’s largest civic associations"?

Because it is not, by far.

We sincerely hope that the next time your foundation will dedicate more diligence to the scrutiny of your candidates and that you do have a hidden agenda to award this dubious individual with such an important prize. Because, with all due respect, Sir, the reasons stated on this page:http://www.templetonprize.org/currentwinner.html are unfortunately totally unfounded.

In hope of your clarifying answers,

S. P. a L. V. (autoři si nepřejí být zveřejněni)
